Every year on the first week of May, we get a chance to celebrate the people who help shape the world’s future; the same people responsible for grooming some of the world’s top leaders and CEOs – our teachers.
Happy Teacher’s Day!
When we think back to when we were in school, your favorite teacher might come up in your mind. You know, the teacher who took extra time to help you through a math problem, made the extra effort to make learning fun, or the person who took the time to get to know you on a deeper level.
As the CEO and owner of Altos Mobile Massage, I firmly believe in meaningful relationships and living the best life you can. Teachers continue to inspire me in that way.
My favorite teachers are the ones who taught my children. When my daughter was in the fourth grade, Mrs. Son-Bell was so in tune with the kids in her class. She had a gift that no one else had: customizing lessons so it fits in with most of the kids in her class — and when someone wasn’t “getting it,” Mrs. Son-Bell would specifically create a new slide to explain for that child.
My daughter was a quiet and shy student and Mrs. Son-Bell encouraged her to be confident and be her authentic self. By the time my daughter graduated the fourth grade, she was an outgoing participator and had so much confidence that it warmed my heart! My daughter loved her teacher so much, that she visited her nearly every week on her way home from school for 3 years afterwards.
My son was fortunate to have Mrs. Schaefer two years in a row. Mrs. Schaefer was the most innovative and creative teacher either of my kids had from K-8. She taught a combination class, where she taught both fourth and fifth grade students. She took curriculum from both grades and made it work for everyone. I know that’s not easy. Her lessons were engaging and exciting! For example, she created lessons that embraced ideas from the Amazing Race Game — where 5th graders went across America to learn, while the 4th graders went up and down the State of California. Her enthusiasm and creativity encouraged me to volunteer in her class – just to see her in action.
My son is older than my daughter, so when it was her turn to be Mrs. Schaefer’s student – I was ecstatic to volunteer in her class again! My kids are now in their teens and to this day, they still talk about Mrs. Schaefer and have visited her several times.
This year — on May 6th to 10th is Teacher Appreciation Week.
Many teachers say what they love to get: is a student or former student to say hello, send an email, a phone call — and say,“Hi– you meant something to me and it helped me get where I am today. Thank You!”
For my part, I will send this blog to Mrs. Son-Bell and Mrs. Schaefer. What are you going to do to appreciate a teacher in your life this year during Teacher Appreciation Week?
